Prof.NARUSHIMA Takayuki, Chairman, Department of Materials Science and Engineering

The IMSE graduate programs were supported by the “Global 30” project. "Global 30" was a Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) program to further promote the internationalization of core Japanese higher education institutions and to turn them into world-class international education and research centers. As one of the selected institutions of the Global 30 program, Tohoku University launched its Future Global Leadership (FGL) project in fall, 2009.
IMSE is one of the FGL programs aimed at enthusiastic global-minded international students who aspire to pursue key international leadership roles in the future. All lectures in this IMSE program can be taken in English.

Development of high performance fuel cell stack

The following three departments are participating in IMSE. Candidates choose a department for enrollment from these three departments:Metallurgy, Materials Science and Materials Processing. Institutes related to IMSE include the Institute for Materials Research (IMR), Institute of Multidisciplinary Research for Advanced Materials (IMRAM). Graduate students can choose from a wide range of course subjects offered by departmental and research institute staff. Students select a thesis supervisor from either departmental or research institute staff. Details of scientific activities and graduate programs will be shown in the following website http://www.material.tohoku.ac.jp/english/.

Computer aided engineering (CAE) for novel casting technology

Students initially enroll in the IMSE masters program, but many will wish to take a longer perspective on their research, conducting cutting-edge research throughout the graduate program.
Since IMSE master’s program directly connects to the doctoral program, students will have the opportunity to go further to pursue the cutting-edge research throughout both Master’s and Doctor’s degree programs.

The academic calendar of IMSE starts in October. Students are screened by the entrance examination held in February or in March of the enrollment year. The examination is held in Tohoku University, Sendai, Japan.

Furthermore, foreign students with excellent grades have opportunities to receive a scholarship provided by the president of Tohoku University. There are also opportunities for the students in the master’s program to be employed as teaching assistants (TAs).
