Hanami (Cherry blossom Viewing)It’s the first event of the year. Unfortunately, it rained this year but we saw cherry blossoms inside from Sapporo Beer Garden.

The School of Engineering Field DayThe Materials Department as a whole come together and aim for first place. One of the lab members, Xiaolong (on the left) who is normally a total indoor person gets some exercise at this event and Ekiden (long distance marathon)
Journal ReviewThis is the first presentation for the seniors. Everyone gives an introduction of a paper they read for the first time. They were all very nervous that morning. We went bowling afterwards.

The Materials Dept. Baseball TournamentWe won the tournament last year, but with the homerun slugger no longer with us, we lost in the first match.
But we comforted each other by saying that we do better at soccer this year.

BarbecueThis is (supposed to be) a barbecue to encourage the students taking the graduate school entrance exam. It’s been held around this season for the past two years. Then, the seniors go into a post-exam vacation. This is a fun time of the year for me personally since I enjoy doing barbecue in my private time.
Open CampusFor two days, we give a tour to the people who visit the campus. It was impressive to see the seniors giving tours in a very polite and enthusiastic manner.

Graduate School Entrance ExamStudents have studied so hard for the exam up to this point. This year, everyone passed. Congratulations! Let’s have a party!!

Summer TripAfter the exam awaits our annual summer trip. This year, we went to Yamagata to experience rafting. But, it was unfortunately canceled due to heavy rain… There is a fun game we always play on our summer trips. On the bottom right is a picture of sleepy Kenichi.
Oct
Imoni (potato and meat soup that is traditional in the Tohoku region. It's famous as an outdoor food in the fall. Making imoni around a fire near a river in groups is called imoni-kai, or imoni get together)We of course have imoni-kai. We look forward to it so much that we go out and have a drink the day before.
Sanma (pacific saury) PartyWe go out and buy a bunch of sanma and cook them. Yum! It's getting chilly outside, but we do it to enjoy sanma!
Ekiden (Long distance road relay)Last year was our third consecutive year in getting first place. We went for the fourth this year, but since we had fewer members, we got 10th place. It goes to show how great our seniors were in the past.

Mid-Term PresentationThe fourth year undergraduate students give a presentation of their research results in English. They don't have very many opportunities to do public speaking in English, so they carefully check their pronunciations and memorize their scripts. It's hard work, but there's a great sense of accomplishment when it's over!
