Fabrication and Mechanical Characterization of Metal or Ceramic Matrix Nanocomposites

Aluminum or titanium-based metal matrix nanocomposites are increasingly applied within the aerospace and automotive industries, due to the combination of high specific modulus and yield strength. Our research line focuses on the development of such metal matrix nanocomposites with high mechanical strength and without any detrimental degradation of the damage tolerance properties. Nano-sized reinforcements are synthesized in-situ via the chemical reaction of metal or ceramic powder mixture during heat treatment. More fundamental work is then carried out to investigate fracture and deformation from room to high temperatures.
